About

About this project

Sternwheeler.org documents the sternwheel steamboats of Alaska, the Yukon and the Pacific Northwest, with a focus on how they were built and how their machinery worked. It is written for ship modelers, engineers and fellow researchers.

The site grows as research happens: field photographs of surviving hulls, engines and boilers; notes from archival plans, surveys and reports; and 3D reconstructions of vessels and their mechanical systems.

Reconstructions

Drawings and 3D models on this site are historical interpretations made for research and modeling. Where original plans are incomplete, dimensions are inferred or estimated, and each model notes its basis. They are not engineering designs sealed for construction, repair or operation.
